The people who use internet are looking for various methods to get the internet connection. Wire connection, Dongle, Mobile Date and Wifi are main methods of it. If few people want to connect to the internet at the same time, wifi is the best mode for that. As this technology spread speedily around the world, it has started to be popular among Sri Lankans also. Even though many internet users are using this wifi, some of them are not knowing the meaning of wifi and its work.
What is this wifi?
A Wifi is the connection which is using a wireless adapter to create hotspots – areas in the vicinity of a wireless router. And they are connected to the network and allow users to access internet services at the same time. This connection is to limited define area and those who are in that area can access the internet via computers or mobile phones. When someone get this connection, he/she will have a password to access this facility. By that, that persn can control it. And the real meaning of this is Wireless Fidelity.
How did this Wifi begin?
In 1985, the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) and the America’s Telecoms Regulator released some wireless spectrums to use, without a government license. These were known as “garbage bands” and it included: 900MHz, 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz radiofrequencies. At the beginning, this was allocated to non-communication purposes like microwave ovens and to military work in addition to communication. This technology developed day by day and during the period of 1997 – 2000, a committee, made up of engineers from NCR Corporation, Bell Labs, and IEEE agreed on an industrywide wireless standard. That was a data¬transfer rate of two megabits per second, using either of two spread¬spectrum technologies, frequency hopping or direct sequence transmission. Along that, the usage of 802.11a and 802.11b, (Max 11 Mbps) are started. In 1999, “IEEE 802.11b Direct Sequence” is retitled as “Wi-Fi”. And Lucent developed a wifi adapter for a less cost as $100. Along that, Apple Company launched the iBook with wifi, under the brand name called AirPort. During the period of 2003 – 2007, 802.11g 802.11e and 802.11n technologies were released. After having a such a long journey, wifi technology is having fast spread today.
Requirements to have wifi?
- You should have a wireless transmitter (Wireless Access Point – WAP )
- It is needed to have a wifi adapter
- You should have a wifi network also. If you don’t have that, then you can inform it to ISPs (Internet Service Providers) and have a network.
What are the Frequencies?
Generally, A wireless network will transmit at a frequency level of 2.4 GHz or 5GHz. Mostly, depending on the user’s needs, the 802.11 networking standards will somewhat vary.
802.11a – It is transmitted the data at a frequency level of 5GHz
802.11b – It is transmitted the data at a frequency level of 2.4GHz. This is a relatively slow speed and it can transmit a maximum of 11 megabits of data per second.
802.11g – It is transmitted the data at a frequency level of 2.4GHz. And it transmits a maximum of 54 megabits of data per second.
