On 21 January 1972, the State Film Corporation of Sri Lanka was founded by Madam Sirimavo Ratwatte Dias Bandaranaike, by a special act of parliament. Actually it was one of significant milestones in Sinhala Films Industry. This corporation is providing various services. But their first step was holding the first Presidential Film Awards Ceremony in 1979. It was done with the collaboration of the Presidential Secretariat and the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. At this festival, the films screened in 1978 were honoured.
